My work in color pencil has a meditative quality. As I build the color slowly in light, concentric strokes, my mind relaxes and I feel a deep connection to the subject.
After the events of 9/11, I spent time in nature to reflect and recover. I collected a variety of seeds, leaves and twigs that were laying on the trail as I hiked Sugarloaf Mountain. That was the subject of my drawings over the next few months, what was happening on the mountain during that frightening time. Liriodendron tulipfera is a drawing in that series. Looking closely at the leaves and seeds while drawing, takes me back to that walk on the mountain.
