Creative Color Pencil on Black Paper Workshop: March 28/29/30

  • Discover the exotic qualities of color pencil in this 3-day workshop using Prisma Color pencils on black paper.  You will find a new language of color when you explore the possibilities of a limited palette on a dark ground.  Tina has used this technique effectively in wet and dry field conditions to capture the flora and fauna in the rainforest, on Sugarloaf Mountain, and in the lush botanical diversity found in the Botanic Garden.   This class will include demonstrations of: color pencil technique, planning color theory for dark grounds, and the use of these techniques to isolate botanical subjects in the midst of complex natural settings.  Individual attention will be given to students of all levels.  Join us for an evocative color pencil exploration in the garden.

  • Art Adventure With the Liliaceae/Lily Family Drawing Botanical Families for their Beauty and Identification April 25/26/27

Join Tina for a 3 day botanical adventure exploring the Lily Family.  Students will draw from Lily family plants in the collection, plan a botanical drawing, and create a piece of art that highlights family characteristics.  We will have fun discovering and drawing this lovely spring family represented by our local Solomon’s Seal, Indian Cucumber Root, Day Lily, and Trout Lily.
  • Demonstrations of the drawing process and the design of a botanical plate for plant family identification is the technical focus of this workshop. However, the drawing process becomes an exciting botanical adventure as we identify the monocot family characteristics and look for opportunities to tell that story in the art. Individual attention will assist students of all levels as we explore the beauty of this elegant family, and create art that captures the lovely lilies in this 3-day art workshop

For more information on these workshops call the U. S. Botanic Garden, #202-226-4082.

What's happening in the Studio:

You will find a variety of paintings & drawings that reflect my passion for this landscape, and its native plant and animal inhabitants.

  • My art welcomes visitors to the Agricultural Reserve, in a new pastoral sign at Historic Whites Ferry. I have an archival print of this view of Sugarloaf Mountain and the surrounding pastoral landscape. Unmatted and framed prints are available.
  • Exciting feature article in the Frederick News Post, Sonia Boin, November 3, 2007. To read the full article click on the link, "Art Inspired by Nature"
  • New paintings from field work last summer in Yosemite National Park.
  • Monoprints, Etchings, and Archival Giclee prints
  • The old oak trees in Barnesville are captured in archival prints.

YOU will continue to find the illustrated Sugarloaf books, and colorful art map of the Agricultural Reserve which describe this enchanting landscape.

  • A Full Color Art Map of Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve.  This art map was featured in the Washington Post in honor of the 25th anniversary celebration of our Agricultural Reserve.  It is a wonderful pictorial guide to the Ag Reserve, filled with plants, animals, farm facts & rustic scenes.  I will have autographed copies for sale, framed and unframed.
  • I am happy to offer the 2-volume Sugarloaf book set. My illustrations fill these books. The first volume is in its 3rd printing, and the illustrated field guide has just been released in a paperback edition, with a vibrant illustrated color cover. These are great gifts for gardeners, hikers, and naturalists who want to learn more about our local flowers and trees.

Come visit Morningstar Studio, 18201 Barnesville Road in Barnesville, MD. Morningstar Studio is a wonderful creative space, built with logs from a circa 1790 log cabin. When you visit my studio, you will experience the magic in historic Barnesville. Enjoy the fall colors in our meadows, hillsides and on Sugarloaf Mountain.  The rural town of Barnesville & my rustic studio are in the heart of the Agricultural Reserve, a pastoral landscape filled with orchards, farms, hay bales, horses, sheep, and lots of artisans.
